Questions
How much health insurance do I need for a Thailand O-A visa?
For an O-A application at a Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate, the requirement is insurance covering all medical expenses, including COVID-19, of at least USD 100,000 (3,000,000 THB) for the length of the stay (rule in force since 1 October 2021). The 40,000 THB outpatient / 400,000 THB inpatient figure still quoted online is the 2019 rule: the Thai General Insurance Association lists it as the extension standard before September 2022. For an extension of stay today, ask your immigration office which documents it requires.
Is a foreign (non-Thai) insurance policy accepted for the O-A visa?
For the application at the embassy, yes: a foreign policy is accepted with the Foreign Insurance Certificate signed and stamped by the insurer. Some embassies also ask for that certificate to be notarised or legalised. For an extension in Thailand, ask your immigration office whether it accepts your policy before relying on it.
Does the O-A insurance have to cover the whole year?
Yes. The certificate must cover the period of stay granted by the visa or extension, which is up to one year for the O-A.
Who can apply for the O-A visa?
The O-A (long stay) visa is for applicants aged 50 or over, for a stay of up to one year, renewable by extension in Thailand. Financial requirements also apply; check the official guideline of the embassy where you apply.
Does Waisiam charge a fee?
No. Comparing plans on Waisiam is free. Waisiam is a comparison platform, not an insurance broker: your request is handled by All Risk Consultant Co., Ltd., an insurance broker licensed by the Office of Insurance Commission (OIC) of Thailand.
