Co-payment: meaning in health insurance

การร่วมจ่าย (Co-payment)

A co-payment is a percentage of each covered bill that you pay yourself, for example 20%, with the insurer paying the rest.

How co-payment works

With a 20% co-payment, a covered bill of 100,000 THB costs you 20,000 THB and the insurer pays 80,000 THB. Unlike a deductible, which is a fixed amount, a co-payment grows with the bill; many policies cap it at a yearly maximum.

Co-payment at renewal in Thailand

Since March 2025, the Office of Insurance Commission (OIC) allows insurers to apply a co-payment at renewal on Thai standard health policies when the insured has frequent claims for minor illnesses with a high claim amount compared with the premium. The co-payment can be removed at a later renewal if claims return to normal. Check whether your policy includes this clause.

General definition: the exact rules are those of your policy wording.
